Publisher Description
TimeStory for iPad/iPhone is a paid app (one-time purchase or annual subscription) for creating graphical timelines--project plans, roadmaps, personal journals, histories, and more, on scales from days to centuries--quickly and easily, while avoiding the complexity of project management tools.
The free download lets you open, view, and share timelines created on TimeStory for Mac. If you want to create and edit timelines on your iPad/iPhone, you can activate the built-in free trial, and then, if you choose, pay once or subscribe annually. The free trial does not auto-renew into a subscription, so there’s no risk.
Use natural touchscreen gestures to navigate and scale the timeline. Create an event just by tapping one of the New Event buttons then tapping or dragging on the timeline where you want it. Attach photos or image files. Divide your timeline into sections. Import your own SVG or PNG icons to mark points in time. Apply background colors, fonts, event shapes, text alignment, and more. Share your work in PDF or PNG format, exporting an entire timeline or just a section of it.
On iPad, TimeStory has great support for Apple Pencil and external keyboards and pointers, works great in Split View and other multitasking modes, and supports multiple windows so you can open multiple documents at once or keep it open next to your research.
Versions:
This version of TimeStory was built to natively support iPad and iPhone. **Note: TimeStory for Mac is a separate purchase.** More info at https://timestory.app/get/

Version History ** Images are much faster and more efficient
Timelines with images in them get a big boost in performance with this update. They will load faster, editing and navigation will be quicker and smoother (especially on older hardware), the app will use less memory, and the files will usually be much smaller than before.
** More free trial opportunities on iOS
Whenever there’s a new update of the iOS app, starting now, if you’ve ever used a free trial but not bought it, your free trial will restart with a new two weeks as soon as you open it. We’ve put a lot of work into the app over the years, and this way you can see if maybe it fits you better now, or if maybe we’ve fixed a bug or shortcoming that you ran into last time.
(As always, the free trial does *not* automatically turn into a purchase or subscription, unlike a lot of other apps. It just gives you two weeks of everything free, then switches back to read-only mode.)
** Other fixes
- Cleaned up some extra items in the attached-image menu.
- Fixed the progress animation when you tap on a document and it takes a while to load. 2.3 Sep 8 This update fixes a bug in the date picker appearance in the Inspector, Go to Date, and other places, on iOS/iPadOS 26+. 2.2.1 Jun 30 You can now embed Web links in the titles and descriptions of your events and sections. Use this to link out to more information or cite sources; you can tap them while browsing the timeline, and they’re included in PDF exports for sharing.
This update also fixed a couple of bugs related to Dark Mode; notably, the “Use System Theme” background color choice was broken in an earlier update and always used the light theme. 2.2 Jun 22 This release brings improvements as well as compatibility with version 4.1 of the Mac app.
- Improved the Details pop-up view for long event titles and different window sizes
- Unique Event IDs for Import/Export: Export a set of events with unique IDs, modify that export, then re-import it and update the same events in place using TimeStory-managed unique ID fields
- Fixed a bug with pressing the Esc key on hardware keyboards while editing text on an iPad 2.1 Feb 15 2.0.1 is a small update just to clarify and improve some text on the free trial and purchases screen.
It builds on 2.0, a major update with a refreshed user interface, features and bug fixes:
- Simplified resizing of section headers and nudging of events, eliminating extra buttons and taps
- A powerful, updated main menu on iPadOS 26, and great support for iPadOS’s new windowing mode
- A new “event lock” feature to prevent accidental edits to events 2.0.1 Jan 25 New controls, a refreshed (but familiar) user interface, features and bug fixes! Key updates:
- Simplified resizing of section headers and nudging of events, eliminating extra buttons and taps
- A powerful, updated main menu on iPadOS 26, and great support for iPadOS’s new windowing mode
- A new “event lock” feature to prevent accidental edits to events
This release is simultaneous with version 4.0 of the Mac edition of TimeStory, and shares many improvements with that app. Find full details at https://timestory.app/release-notes 2.0 12/16/2025 Build even longer prehistoric timelines, with date support extended back to 1 million years BC, and improvements to year number displays.
See more information in the Details pop-up for events and sections, which has been cleaned up, extended, and made much better at handling long description text.
This release also fixes a couple of bugs: PDF/PNG export had been sometimes making unwanted adjustments to your gridline spacing, and links in event titles were using black text even over dark backgrounds.
Find full details at https://timestory.app/release-notes/ 1.7 07/08/2025 This update fixes a bug that affected users with certain calendar or region settings on their device; in those cases, Go to Date, Go to Today, and Inspector date pickers would display and choose incorrect dates. 1.6.1 03/26/2025 A collection of great new features for styling and organizing your timelines!
- Collapse any section or subsection to a thin bar, hiding its contents, then expand it again, with a few taps.
- Set the opacity of weekend, date range, and other background colors, from 0 to 100%, so overlapping highlights and backgrounds remain visible (and look better!)
- Apply new striped patterns to event bars and lines, to vary their look or mark them as tentative.
- Bookmark any event so you can quickly scroll to it, no matter how big your timeline is.
It also fixes a few bugs. Most importantly, vertical-only and horizontal-only drags didn’t work right if you kept the second finger on the screen after activating them; they now work as intended.
Check out full feature details and screenshots on the website: https://timestory.app/release-notes/ 1.6 03/11/2025 This update fixes a couple of bugs related to typing in or choosing dates in Quick Entry, Go to Date, and other places. Most importantly, in some languages, when typing in a numeric date separated by “.” characters (e.g. 28.1.2025), the app would previously misinterpret the date and reject it with an “out of range” message.
(This update comes very soon after 1.5, which first introduced iPhone support along with a batch of iPad-specific changes; check out those release notes if you missed them!) 1.5.1 01/28/2025 Now available on iPhone! Use it as a companion app or entirely on its own. Every feature, from the timeline editor to the Inspector, was revisited to make sure it was usable on any size device. The iPad and iPhone versions are a single app; if you buy or subscribe on one platform, you unlock both.
Existing iPad users will also find these new features:
- Quick Entry is now available on iPhone and iPad. This allows you to type in (or paste) an event title and date range to add it to the timeline, and has long been part of TimeStory for Mac.
- When viewing a timeline with left-side section headers, there’s now a button to shrink that header area and reveal more timeline content.
- A simple User Guide is now built into the app, and a new integrated Welcome view, available from the document chooser, provides access to help and example documents, to get you started more quickly.
There are also several bug fixes and minor improvements. One significant bug that was fixed: When hovering over the timeline with an Apple Pencil or pointer, the date displayed below the hover line could be completely wrong in 1.4.1.
Visit https://timestory.app/release-notes/#i1.5 for full, detailed release notes, with screenshots! 1.5 01/23/2025 This update fixes a bug in date inputs that appeared on iPads configured for certain specific languages and regions. This could affect dates in the Inspector and other places, in some cases leading to a hang or crash. It contains no other updates over 1.4, which was a large update filled with improvements and greatly-increased historical date support. 1.4.1 11/16/2024 The app now supports both light and dark color schemes, and, for iPadOS 18 or newer, light and dark icons to match your Home Screen settings!
Working on timelines of history or even prehistory? The biggest change in this update is a major improvement in handling of ancient dates, which can now range back to 500,000 BC, with improved date entry, formatting, and performance.
Other updates and fixes include:
- Fixed behavior when deleting a nonempty section in a document with subsections
- Type-in date fields on every date-picker input, for quick navigation
- Fixed handling of long event/section titles in the Inspector
Find a full, detailed list of updates at https://timestory.app/release-notes/ 1.4 11/06/2024 This release adds the ability to protect any timeline with a password, to help you add a layer of privacy to sensitive or personal files. (Take care not to forget a password you set; there's no way to recover a lost password!)
This update also fixes several bugs. Section-level standard event text colors now work; custom timeline view renaming no longer sometimes quits mid-typing; and changes to the timeline's language and date format now update event date labels immediately.
Find full details on these changes at https://timestory.app/release-notes/ 1.3 07/07/2024 New, improved Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil, and trackpad support! With supported hardware, make editing even more comfortable:
- Get haptic feedback as events snap to gridlines, as modes change, and more
- Hover over any point in the timeline to see a labeled vertical line, easily identifying a precise date
- Start creating a new event, hover over a location, and see its preview inserted there
V1.2 also brings new dragging options to control snapping and overlap avoidance, and lets you type a date into the Go To Date form as an alternative to picking it on a calendar.
It also fixes bugs, including two different cases that could crash the app, and a couple of smaller issues related to editing with the Inspector.
Find full details and screenshots at https://timestory.app/release-notes/. 1.2 05/31/2024 Version 1.1 brings full CSV import and export support! These features are based on and compatible with the Mac edition, and make it possible to interoperate with other apps or to edit your timeline data externally. V1.1 also adds support for configuring a timeline’s date format and language, for when you don’t want to use the iPad’s system setup.
It also fixes a a few bugs. Notably, documents were not correctly remembering your horizontal scroll position when reopened, and edits to event and section titles could sometimes be applied to the wrong item.

- Collapse any section or subsection to a thin bar, hiding its contents, then expand it again, with a few taps.
- Set the opacity of weekend, date range, and other background colors, from 0 to 100%, so overlapping highlights and backgrounds remain visible (and look better!)
